Rare Jaguar makes Memorial Day debut at Palm Beach Zoo

Palm Beach, Fla. — Her name is Fiona, she was found clinging to life more than two years ago in Panama and taken to a wildlife rehabilitation center for most of that time getting her comfortable with her surroundings.

According to a release from the zoo, she was motherless and injured after being attacked by hunting dogs in the first week of her life.  Because she was so young, Fiona would not have survived in the wild on her own.

The release says Fiona has ideal genetics and a jaguar from Quebec named Zooka — has been identified as a possible mate.

The jaguar is considered a “near-threatened” species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Fiona was one of fewer than 300 jaguars in Panama.
