The rabbits were discovered over the weekend in suburban Schaumburg, WGN-TV reported. A woman was living in the room with the animals, the television station reported.

The hotel, which was not identified, stopped providing room-cleaning services in March 2020 because of COVID-19 restrictions, WGN reported.

Fifteen of the rabbits were pregnant, WFLD reported.

Red Door Animal Shelter of Chicago became involved after the organization convinced the woman to give up the animals, WGN reported.

According to the television station, the woman began with three rabbits -- one was neutered. However, by last weekend the number of bunnies had grown to 47, ranging in age from a week old to 2 years old, the television station reported.

One Tail at a Time of Chicago has also assisted in finding new homes for the rabbits and posted a wish list for supplies. The nonprofit also wrote about the rabbits in a Facebook post.

“Rabbits reproduce just like they say they do,” One Tail at a Time wrote. “So well-meaning people can end up in a really scary mess in a really short amount of time. We’re not here to judge, but we are here to help.”
