‘Lovely, clever’ border collie turns self in after getting lost

Clever girl: CCTV footage from a security camera at a police station in Loughborough, England, shows a border collie named Rosie enter the station seeking help. The dog had become lost while on a walk with her owner. (Leicestershire Police)

LOUGHBOROUGH, England — A border collie named Rosie brought smiles to police officers in England last week when she strolled into the station to turn herself in after becoming lost on a walk.

Leicestershire police officials wrote on Facebook that the dog had become lost when its owner was walking her and a second dog nearby. CCTV footage shows Rosie walk through the automatic doors into the Loughborough station and take a seat in a corner of the lobby.

“Our staff fetched some water for Rosie and made fast friends with plenty of fuss,” the department’s Facebook post said. “Thankfully she was wearing a collar, so a lead was available to contact Rosie’s owner.”

The dog’s owner was “delighted” that she had been found safe, police officials said.

The video, which was posted on Monday, had been viewed more than 51,000 times as of noon Wednesday. Followers shared in the officers’ praise for the dog, who they described as a “lovely, clever” girl.

One commenter wrote that his yellow lab would often walk up the street and catch the attention of the local police.

“Eventually the police stopped calling the shelter for him and bought a dog bed and food for him at their station,” the man wrote. “They would call us directly to say he was visiting them again.”

Others commented on the intelligence of border collies, which are consistently considered to be among the smartest dog breeds around. The American Kennel Club describes the border collie, which is a herding breed, as a “remarkably bright workaholic.”

“Blimey, how clever!” one woman wrote on the department’s page. “I love it!”

“Clever Rosie! If you are lost you should always find a policeman,” another follower wrote.

Some commenters offered praise for the humans involved in the heartwarming story.

“Well done, guys,” one man wrote. “It seems she was well looked after and made new friends.”
