Tymber Skan code violations reach $21 million

Tymberskan Condos (Joe Ruble)

Orange County commissioners are still trying to find a way to keep dozens of families in their homes while addressing the many needs of the Tymber Skan condo complex that has fallen into disrepair and has become a haven for crime.

During a staff briefing today, commissioners were told the total amount of code violations has reached $21 million.  Every building in the complex is guilty of a code violation, said Mayor Teresa Jacobs.

The residents in the Holden Heights community were threatened with being chased from their homes when Orlando Utilities Commission decided to turn off the water service for lack of payment.

An agreement was reached last month to keep the water flowing, but did not address $83,000 in unpaid bills for water and sewer service.

Commissioner Fred Brummer commented that perhaps the money the county has on hand to help residents, should be used to move them to another location.

"Would we not be better to change directions and use the funding to relocate these folks and to move on?" he asked.

"If the situation is insurmountable, it's insurmountable," he said.

The original complex was 47 buildings, 25 remain occupied, Brummer noted.

Commissioner Tiffany Moore Russell is trying to coordinate with the mayor's office to have two meetings with the residents later this month.
